Under the Latin sun, we visit Spain and Argentina! From de Falla’s four movement work, the Cuatro Piezas Españolas (each depicting a different region of Spain), to Turina’s La Oración del torero (where we can scent the drama of the bullring and the quiet prayer at the end), we are led by passion to the unique European nation of Spain. We continue our Latin journey to Argentina where the composer Astor Piazolla revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. We return to Spain, via Finland! Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen, wrote The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquixot in 1986.The pseudo-literary title, a compound of iconic, fictional characters Don Juan (the libertine and seducer) and Don Quixote (the bumbling knight-errant) engages the listener in music both comic and tragic, in a tour de force for solo cello and string orchestra.
